Attraction 1: The Red Waters of Laguna Colorada
The main attraction, of course, is Laguna Colorada itself, which captivates visitors with its deep red waters caused by high concentrations of red sediments and microorganisms. As we approached the lake, we couldn’t believe our eyes—the vibrant hues contrasted beautifully against the backdrop of the Andes Mountains. We took a leisurely stroll around the shore, watching as flocks of flamingos waded through the shallows. This is one of the best spots to observe these elegant birds, and we spent hours photographing them and soaking in the stunning scenery.

Attraction 2: Surrounding Geothermal Features
After admiring the lake, we headed to the nearby geothermal areas, where we encountered bubbling mud pots and steaming geysers. The contrast of the hot geothermal features against the cold mountain air was fascinating. We watched as steam rose from the ground, creating an otherworldly atmosphere. The smell of sulfur filled the air, reminding us of the Earth’s raw power. This area is an excellent spot for photography, especially with the colorful landscapes surrounding it.

Exploring the surrounding area, we also discovered several scenic overlooks that provided stunning views of Laguna Colorada and the mountains beyond. One particularly breathtaking spot was the lookout point known as “Mirador de la Laguna Colorada.” From here, we captured panoramic photos that showcased the lake’s unique color and the surrounding landscape. Additionally, we were lucky enough to spot some local wildlife, including vicuñas and Andean foxes, which added to the magic of the experience.

Be prepared for high altitudes—Laguna Colorada is located at about 4,300 meters (14,100 feet) above sea level—so staying hydrated and acclimatizing properly is essential. Dress in layers, as temperatures can vary widely throughout the day.
