The Majestic Three Peaks: An Unforgettable Hike
Our trip to the Dolomites led us to the heart of its crown jewel—the Three Peaks (Tre Cime di Lavaredo). Standing at over 2,999 meters, these three rugged giants dominate the landscape. The most rewarding part of this hike is how the scenery shifts with every step, from rolling green meadows to rocky terrain, all with jaw-dropping views.
We started our hike from Rifugio Auronzo, which is the go-to starting point for exploring the Three Peaks. The trail itself is moderately challenging, so make sure you’re wearing proper hiking boots. We passed wildflowers, friendly marmots, and even encountered a herd of goats that made us pause for a mini photo shoot. The view of the peaks constantly changes, offering different angles and breathtaking photo ops.
Opening Hours: The trail is open year-round, but the best time to visit is between June and September when the weather is milder and the trail conditions are safer. In winter, snow makes the trek more difficult unless you’re equipped for snowshoeing.
Tickets & Parking: You’ll need to pay an entrance fee if you drive up to Rifugio Auronzo. The toll for private vehicles is about €30. Public transportation, such as buses from Misurina, also runs to the parking area.
Lago di Misurina: A Mirror to the Peaks
A short drive from the Three Peaks, Lago di Misurina is a tranquil lake that perfectly reflects the towering peaks around it. We spent a couple of hours just sitting by the lake, taking in the serene surroundings. If you’re up for it, you can rent a rowboat for about €10 per hour, and enjoy the peacefulness of floating across this alpine gem.
This is also a great spot to grab some local food, with many cafes nearby serving delicious regional dishes. We recommend trying the speck sandwiches—an absolute must!
Stay at the Charming Rifugio Locatelli
If you’re looking for a place to stay, Rifugio Locatelli is a cozy alpine lodge located within a short hike from the Three Peaks. This is the perfect base camp for exploring the peaks and surrounding areas. The lodge is simple yet comfortable, offering dormitory-style beds starting from €45 per night with an optional half-board meal plan for an extra €20. Waking up here with the morning light casting golden hues over the peaks was an unforgettable experience.
Be sure to book early, especially in summer, as the rifugio gets quite popular. There’s no better feeling than sipping on a hot drink at sunset while gazing at the peaks in the distance.
