Are you ready for a little adventure in southern France? Today, we’re heading to Garlaban Mountain — a peaceful yet breathtaking destination that many travelers miss.
If you're looking for a hike with history, nature, and amazing views, this is the place. Let’s get into all the important details to plan the perfect trip!
Garlaban Mountain is located in Bouches-du-Rhône, Provence, France, near the charming town of Aubagne. It's about 12 miles (20 kilometers) east of Marseille. The main peak stands at 715 meters (2,346 feet), and the highest point, Butte des Pinsots, reaches 731 meters (2,398 feet). Its location makes it easy for us to enjoy sweeping views of Marseille, the Huveaune Valley, and even the Mediterranean Sea.
Good news — hiking Garlaban is completely free!
There’s no entrance fee or parking fee at the major trailheads like La Font de Mai. We can enjoy the trails, nature, and panoramic views without worrying about ticket prices. However, if we want to visit La Font de Mai Eco-museum (which is near the trail and offers cultural exhibitions), it usually costs about $5 USD for adults.
Since Garlaban is a natural area, the trails are open 24/7. However, it’s highly recommended to hike during daylight hours for safety.
The La Font de Mai visitor center (a popular starting point) is open:
- From April to October: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM
- From November to March: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
- Closed on Mondays and public holidays.
By Car:
From Marseille, we can drive about 30 minutes to reach Aubagne. Follow signs to "La Font de Mai" or "Chemin du Passet" for parking areas close to trailheads.
Parking is usually free.
By Public Transport:
- Train: Take the TER train from Marseille Saint-Charles Station to Aubagne (about 15 minutes).
- Bus: From Aubagne’s train station, we can take local buses (like Line 7) toward Font de Mai, or grab a taxi for a short ride to the hiking area.
The perfect seasons for visiting are spring (April–June) and fall (September–November).
During these months, the weather is pleasant, flowers or autumn colors brighten the trails, and the skies are usually clear for fantastic views.
- Summer (July–August) can be extremely hot, reaching up to 95°F (35°C) or more, making hiking dangerous in the afternoon.
- Winter (December–February) is cooler, but rain can make trails muddy and slippery.
Best Time of Day:
Start early in the morning, around 7:00–9:00 AM, to avoid the midday sun and enjoy quieter trails.
Hiking Garlaban is a moderate challenge. Most trails are 6–9 kilometers roundtrip and take around 3–4 hours depending on the route and pace.
The trails are rocky, with beautiful Mediterranean plants like rosemary, thyme, and pines along the way.
When we reach the summit, the panoramic views stretch across Marseille, the Mediterranean Sea, and even the Sainte-Baume mountains on a clear day — a truly unforgettable sight!
1. Wear proper hiking shoes: The rocky paths need good grip.
2. Bring enough water (at least 1.5 liters per person): There are no water fountains on the trail.
3. Apply sunscreen and wear a hat: Even outside summer, the sun can be strong.
4. Bring snacks or a picnic: Enjoying a break with a view is the best part!
5. Download an offline map: Some trail signs are old and can be confusing.
6. Respect nature: Stay on the marked trails and carry your trash out.
If we want to stay overnight nearby:
- Aubagne: Offers charming hotels and cozy bed-and-breakfasts, prices around $70–$120 USD per night.
- Marseille: A great option if we want a bigger city vibe, just 30 minutes away.
Lykkers, Garlaban Mountain invites us into a world where wide-open skies meet endless trails, and every step feels like a new discovery. Walking these paths, we find not just stunning views, but also a quiet peace that stays with us long after we leave.
If you’re dreaming of fresh air, golden sunshine, and unforgettable memories, Garlaban is calling.
Let’s lace up our shoes, grab our backpacks, and get ready — our next adventure together is already waiting!
